Saga Humane Society unveils plan for new animal shelter and headquarters

San Pedro’s Saga Humane Society is realizing one of its primary goals building a new animal shelter and offices at the northern end of Seagrape Drive. Situated at the same Fort Dog” location where Saga dogs are housed, this upgrade has been possible thanks to generous donations.

According to Saga staff, the project has been in the pipeline since it was founded in 1999. The non-profit organization started with the dream of creating a safe and healthy space for the homeless and unwanted animals of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. The management invites the public to be part of this new era in animal care. “Our new shelter will be much more than just bricks and mortar,” they said. “This monumental achievement is the culmination of years of hard work, determination, and unwavering dedication to the welfare of animals in our community.” The Saga family added that soon, they will post on their Facebook page how much has been collected and how much more is needed to complete the construction of their new shelter and headquarters.

While the construction of the building is well underway, their offices continue serving the community at their current location on Sea Star Street near Seagrape Drive. They offer veterinary services and have been taking care of rescued or surrendered cats and dogs over the years. At times, the organization has struggled to run its operations, but through fundraisers, volunteers, and generous donors, they have stayed afloat for over 24 years.

Currently, Saga is housing 51 cats and 36 dogs. Saga said these pets are all available for adoption. Anyone interested can visit their offices for more information during their opening hours, Monday to Friday, 9AM-5PM, and Saturdays until mid-day. The adoption process usually takes around two days, and if approved, there is a $50 fee, which includes vaccines. The animals are all spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and with monthly preventatives.

Adoption forms can be found on Saga’s website at https://shorturl.at/gFHW6. It is easy to follow if you plan to start an adoption process and provide a home to these deserving animals.
