Effective August 1, 2021, the San Pedro Transport Department (SPTD) will be enforcing a new rule regarding golf cart rentals. All golf carts owned by a rental company will need to be labeled with the company’s logo/name, telephone number, and golf cart number. Failure to adhere to this measure will result in a fine.
According to the SPTD, this is to monitor how many golf carts a company has in service and makes it easier for their internal records. It has been reported in the past that some companies used unregistered/unlicensed golf carts or personal vehicles for the business. The proper identification of rentals is also expected to add more professionalism to the service.
Many golf cart rental owners understand the measure and shared that it is something positive for the island. Some of these business owners added that perhaps this move could help control traffic congestion in downtown San Pedro. However, they expect the new rule is enforced adequately to succeed.
The traffic issue on the island has been ongoing. The amount of motorists during rush hours gives the town a city atmosphere with non-stop vehicular traffic. As the island community continues to develop, the need to limit vehicles is becoming a priority. One of the first steps at the beginning of this year came from the Ambergris Caye Traffic Control Committee. They informed the public that vehicle permits for golf cart rentals, large vehicles, and taxis would no longer be issued until further notice. This continues to be the norm, and anyone breaking this regulation can face a fine of up to $1,000.
