Repairs are underway at the Sir Barry Bowen Bridge in the Boca del Rio area. The major problem seems to be corrosion, and the top iron beams need to be replaced. The bridge is the only way to access the northern part of the island, so its refurbishment is paramount for residents and businesses.
The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) announced the repairs on Tuesday, June 8th, and that traffic would be diverted to one side of the bridge, avoiding its closure. According to the SPTC, they are taking care of minor repairs before a team of engineers comes to the island on June 12th to assess the damages and start rehabilitating the bridge.
The San Pedro Transport Department has been monitoring the traffic on the bridge as it undergoes repairs. Motorists take turns to cross the one-way access. The SPTC also indicated that no heavy/large vehicles will be allowed to cross the bridge in the meantime. It is believed that the amount of large dump trucks going across the bridge every day is causing the bridge’s deterioration. Before a possible collapse of the bridge, local authorities are making the necessary repairs.
No timeline could be given as to when the repairs will be complete. However, islanders and tourists are asked to be patient and cooperate with the traffic officers managing the detour. The repairs at the bridge are imperative to guarantee everyone’s safety.
