The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season is just days away, and according to predictions, it will be another above-normal season. The season officially runs from June 1 through November, and forecasters estimate the number of named storms will range between 13 and 20, of which three to 10 could become hurricanes and even major weather cyclones ranging from category 3 to 5 storms.
Information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration indicates that the formation of this number of storms is about 70% and advises communities along the coastline and inland. In Belize, the call to start preparing has begun. Belizeans are asked to stay safe and pay attention to all advice from official sources like the National Meteorological Service and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO).
The names for the storms this hurricane season are Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny, Elsa, Fred, Grace, Henri, Ida, Julian, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, Odette, Peter, Rose, Sam, Teresa, Victor, and Wanda.
The season is off to an early start for the seventh consecutive year, with subtropical cyclone Ana, named on May 21, forming near Bermuda. Due to the changes in the global climate, storms are developing before the June 1 start of the season. If storms continue to be named before the season’s official starting date, forecasters believe that the June 1st beginning date could be changed in years to come.
