On the evening of Friday, May 7th, the Government of Belize issued new COVID-19 regulations addressing sporting events and allowing restaurants to increase their indoor capacity of seated guests.
The new Statutory Instrument (SI) SI No. 51 of 2021 Public Health (Prevention of the Spread of Infectious …indicates that sporting events should not include spectators. Recreational and competitive sporting events are allowed for non-contact sports. This includes bodybuilding, cycling, canoe, golf, sailing, table tennis, track and field, yoga, sailing, swimming, and cricket.
Contact sports can only take place for training purposes. Participants are exempt from practicing social distancing or wearing a face mask. These contact sports include baseball, basketball, football, martial arts, softball, rugby, boxing, and volleyball, to name a few.
Restaurants indoor capacity increase to 75%
The SI now allows restaurants to allow more people in their indoor facilities to a maximum of 75% of their seating capacity. Restaurants are reminded that these dining-in services should be by reservation only.
The SI did not include an update on the current curfew. The curfew remains Sunday to Thursday 10PM to 5AM and Fridays and Saturday’s midnight to 5AM. Other remaining regulations include mask-wearing when in public areas, hand washing regularly, and social distancing.
