As more tourism employees get their first dose, the Minister of Tourism and Diaspora Relations, the Honourable Anthony Mahler, said the vaccination should boost the tourism industry. “The availability of the COVID-19 vaccine for those working in the tourism sector is welcomed news,” Mahler said. “The vaccination of frontline tourism workers, the reduction in active COVID-19 cases, the receipt of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Safe Travels stamp, and the ongoing implementation of the Gold Standard Certification program convey to the world that Belize is a safe destination,” said Mahler.
A release from theindicates that 87% of the tourism sector said they are interested in the vaccine following a survey. In San Pedro Town, tourism personnel have not hesitated in taking the vaccine. Many are now waiting for their second dose, which is expected to be administered in about 12 weeks.
According to MOHW, over 22,000 Belizeans have received the first dose of the vaccine. The country received the first shipment of 33,600 of the long-awaited vaccines via the COVAX alliance. Belize had previously received 1,000 from Barbados and 25,000 from India.
The second phase of the National COVID-19 Immunization campaign, which began on Tuesday, March 30th, also includes members of the National Assembly & Judiciary, teachers, police officers, and the Customs and Immigration department staff.
To reach more front liners and vulnerable Belizeans, the government will be acquiring additional vaccines in the upcoming weeks.
