As part of a tour of the municipalities throughout the country, on Thursday, January 28th, the Honourable Oscar Requeña Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government paid a visit to San Pedro Town. The Minister was accompanied by his Minister of State, the Honourable Ramiro Ramirez, and Chief Executive Officer Valentino Shal. While on the island, they met with the People’s United Party (PUP) slate contesting the upcoming Municipal Elections. They also conferred with Mayor Daniel Guerrero, where they discussed plans to restore the island’s infrastructure with Requeña’s ministry’s support.

Requeña first met with the PUP Mayoral candidate Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez and his team. They discussed the vision and plans they have for San Pedro and look forward to collaborating with Requeña if they are elected as the next town council.

Accompanied by Belize Rural South (Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker) Standard Bearer, the Honourable Andre Perez, Requeña visited Mayor Guerrero. They discussed topics affecting the island community, from the lack of representation in Central Government to lobbying for funds and resources and environmental issues on the island.

The big problem with street infrastructure

San Pedro Town’s street rehabilitation is an ongoing issue, with every year the rainy season worsening the conditions. Currently, some streets in the Escalante, DFC, San Pablo, San Pedrito (to name a few) are almost impassable due to the lack of proper drainage.

Before COVID-19, students and those commuting to work had to navigate these bad streets. Despite island residents’ appeals for better roads, the San Pedro Town Council has failed to address the matter adequately, and no significant improvements have been made to the streets. San Pedranos are hopeful that as the dry season arrives, the new administration running the country will address poor infrastructure and road rehabilitation on the island.

Minister Requeña’s visit sealed an agreement with the island authorities to work together towards San Pedro’s sustainability and a better way of life for all islanders.
