Although tourism is slowly picking up, the San Pedro Tour Guide Association (SPTGA) continues looking after their members with an ongoing pantry program every Friday. The campaign began after the COVID-19 pandemic hit Belize last year in March, and thanks to the support of donors, it continues. The pantry program has even received support from local entities like the San Pedro Tour Operators Association (SPTOA), who recently delivered food items for their weekly distribution.
This donation was possible with Xsite Belize Sailing and Adventures assistance via their contacts in the United States of America and Faye Foundation. The food items, described as packets of rice enriched with vitamins and minerals, were added to the weekly food rations given out to tour guides. The freight company Caribbean Queen barged the supplies to the island.
The SPTGA is happy to continue helping hundreds of tour guides affected by the tourism industry’s collapse. The food assistance includes basic staples such as rice, beans, cooking oil, meat (chicken), dairy products, flour, and hygienic products.Â
The SPTGA intends to continue providing for their members in need. Anyone willing and able to help their pantry program can do by visiting https://belizekids.org/covid-food-drive/, where additional information can be found about the initiative and how donations can be made.Â
