Many families in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, remain jobless and struggling to bring food to their tables due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many organizations on the island have come forward to help via pantry and food programs. The Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye is running a COVID relief campaign to provide food hampers to those most in need with the help of donations. With the help of the Rotaract Club of Ambergris Caye, they hope to provide food assistance to as many families they can help.
The distribution of food bags has been taking place on Tuesdays and Fridays, and recipients are usually notified the day before as to where they can collect their groceries. Personal information (names) and a code is provided to them, then compared against a list before food bags are handed over. The distribution usually begins at 2PM at the K-Mart Shopping Centre north of downtown San Pedro. Led by Rotaract president Yakarelis Hernandez, and Rotary Club’s Treasurer Michelle Duncan, welcome and assist each recipient.
According to organizers, the goal is to raise a minimum of $15,000 US to feed about 100 families for one month. So far the response from donors has been remarkable and the club is nearly halfway to their goal. To continue helping those most vulnerable until the island’s economy strengthens, more donations are needed. The Rotary Club of Ambergris Caye and the Rotaract Club thank everyone who has helped in this worthy cause. Hope Haven was acknowledged for helping to coordinate the food basket recipients. Mahmoud Harmouch of Caye Mart was thanked profusely for organizing the packaging of the grocery bags and having them ready in time.
