The late Right Honorable George Cadle Price is the founding father of Belize, and to honor him, ‘National Service Day’ is held in honor of him on September 19th. This is a day where people participate in community service projects in order to make a positive change through hard work and service, and a tribute to Price himself, who was known for his ethics and servitude.
On Monday, September 19th, the San Pedro Lions Club paid tribute to the Father of our Nation in a special flag raising ceremony that began at 7AM at the Lions Den. The ceremony was followed by a prayer and singing of the National Anthem.
Afterwards, members and guests gathered to enjoy a small social and breakfast. All four of the Lions Clubs across the country participated in similar activities to honor Rt. Hon. George Price.
According to Lion Jan Brown, the club traditionally visits schools, but since classes were canceled due to the Belize National Teacher’s Union Protest, the school visit has been set for another date. During this visit, the San Pedro Lions will present all educational institutions with a new Belize flag.
National Service Day was officially declared to commemorate the passing of the Late George Price in 2011. After starting the peaceful, constructive Belize Revolution in 1950, George Price led Belize to independence on the September 21, 1981. Premier Price died on September 19, 2011 at the age of 92.
