The 17th annual Coral Reef Ed-ventures summer camp is back. The fun, educational camp collaborates with students from Smith College in Massachusetts, USA, and Hol Chan Marine Reserve. A group of six volunteers have traveled to San Pedro to act as this year’s counsellors for the two-week summer program. Students learn about the coral and marine ecosystem, while getting hands-on experience.
The camp started on Monday, June 27th with nine registered children between the ages of 7-12. The counsellors will be teaching the children about conserving the oceans’ precious resources in an innovative manner. According to Laura Henry, group leader for Coral Ed-ventures, the campers are loving science. “It’s been very busy, and the kids are super excited. We are trying to inspire the kids to conduct their own scientific research, and help them to do a biodiversity count. We are looking at accessing the beaches, mangroves, and coral reefs. Also, these kids will learn ocean acidification, where they will place eggs in different grades of acid,” said Henry.
With help from Hol Chan, the Coral Reef Ed-ventures program started 17 years ago as a result of Smith College professors conducting research on the Belize Barrier Reef.
The program is scheduled to culminate on Wednesday, July 13th with a graduation ceremony at the Lion’s Den starting at 6PM.
