As development continues in San Pedro Town, so does the need for infrastructure and better roads. Recently, works on the entrance road to San Pedrito have been quite visible. While some believe the road was going to be paved, The San Pedro Town (SPTC) has clarified that it is only being filled.
“The road into San Pedrito is not getting paved; we are just filling the road so that it is smoother for all commuters,” said Mayor Daniel Guerrero in an interview with The San Pedro Sun. He assured that once the road is properly compact with the hard-core material, the upcoming rainy season will not affect it.
“This project is being done with the help of the northern road equipment. It is the same company that is building the road in the northern part of the island. We are putting the material and they are putting the equipment,” said Guerrero.
SPTC is fully financing the rehabilitation of the road. The idea to start upgrading the road in San Pedrito and other areas of the island came after speaking with Rommel Burgess, who is in charge of the construction of road in Northern Ambergris Caye. “This company finished the first phase of the road in the north part of the island, now they are waiting for the approval of the second phase. But while they wait, they have agreed to come and help us in fixing our streets in the town,” said Guerrero. He added that this is a good example of team work and giving back to the community without expecting anything in return.
When the road is completed in San Pedrito, it will connect the sub-division to the new road that will be open in the San Pablo area. According to local authorities, this will alleviate traffic congestion on the island. Besides, San Pedrito, the other road to benefit from the road rehabilitation will be Seaweed Street, which runs through the San Juan area.
