The annual Mother’s Day Extravaganza organized by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), along with sponsors and volunteers, celebrated island mommies in style, treating them to a full night of fun on Saturday, May 7th. The event took place at the Honorable Louise Sylvester Complex, where gates opened at 7PM. For a $20 admission fee, mothers got to enjoy a variety of entertainment, gourmet food, drinks, prizes and lot of surprises. With the field packed with over two hundred mothers of all ages, they certainly received the royal treatment.
A team of volunteers assisted in escorting the ladies to their seats and delivering refreshments before the entertainment began. On the menu for the night was Belize’s national dish of rice and beans, chicken, and potato salad. Hosting the event was Eiden Salazar, who did a fantastic job in running the program smoothly and making the mothers feel comfortable.
One of the best features of the extravaganza were the chances the mothers had to win awesome prizes. However, these prizes were not handed out freely, as it required effort from the mothers too. Games and contests were put in place to add to the excitement, which included dancing contests, karaoke, musical chairs, and strategic games like the “green banana”. Prizes ranged from toasters, blenders, pressure cookers, TV’s, microwaves, various $100 gift certificates, restaurant vouchers and gift bags. The moms brave enough to go onstage lucked out with some fantastic prizes.
For entertainment, the ladies were treated to music by Jose Gabriel, a Juan Gabriel imitator, who sang a plethora of popular “romanticas”. The crowd enjoyed the songs as he incorporated slow, sensual dances that had the audience engaged, whistling, and hooting for more. He definitely was not shy when it came to charming the mothers of San Pedro. Throughout his performance, he invited the crowd to wave their roses in the air and sing along to his songs.
In between intermissions was a special dance performance by Yaka’s Elite Dancers, who showed their talent and love for dancing. Meanwhile, volunteers were assisting the mother’s needs, offering more drinks, and handed out delicious cupcakes.
As always, the highlight of the night was the announcement of the Mother of the Year. Every year, mothers who are 65 and older are entered into a drawing on the night of the event. MC Eiden had the honors of picking the lucky ticket number and announced the winning mother. This year, Estela Worthington won the title of “Mother of the Year 2016-2017”. Estela was joined onstage by Mayor Daniel Guerrero, Honorable Manuel Heredia, Miss San Pedro 2015-2016, Iris Saleguero, and outgoing Mother of the Year, Mrs. Graciela Vasquez, to be presented with a crown, sash, bouquet of flowers, and an abundance of gifts.
As midnight drew closer, the anticipated comedian of the night, Jose Cruz, of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico came onstage with one mission in mind to make all of the mothers in the audience laugh. The mothers were certainly delighted, and their smiles lit the night.
His act was followed by the closing performance of San Pedro’s number one band, Rompe Raja. The ladies in the audience got up and danced, enjoying every last moment of their night as the band played their popular songs.
The SPTC commends all island mothers, and extends deep appreciation them for their contribution to our society. The San Pedro Sun thanks the SPTC, their sponsors, and volunteers for ensuring that our lovely mothers enjoyed their day in extravagant style. Happy Mother’s Day to all our moms!
