Plan proposed to light up our beach

The San Pedro Police Department (SPPD), along with the San Pedro Town Council and other stakeholders are in the beginning stage of negotiating a much-needed addition to La Isla Bonita’s beaches. The plan proposes installing solar lights along our shores, providing adequate lighting for all pedestrians.Solar Lights Beach Police-1
Officers from the Coastal Executive Unit, Sandra Bowden and Henry Jemmott, will embark on this plan as an additional safety protocol/strategy to prevent crimes and accidents. “These lights will be placed around the beach where we have registered crimes in the past. The purpose of the lights is not only for tourists’ safety, but that of residents in general. If we can improve the lighting conditions in certain areas on the island, then those areas can become safer for everyone—ensuring that law enforcement can focus elsewhere. A simple light can deter a criminal, just as the presence of an officer can deter a crime,” said Bowden.
Crimes in the past were often committed in darkened areas around town. The SPPD hopes to get support from Mayor Daniel Guerrero and other stakeholders, including the businesses near the areas of concern.
“People often walk the beach, so we have seen the need for adding lights. The town board has vowed to install the first ten solar lights on the beachside and in our plan, we will place lights up by San Telmo Area,” said Jemmott.
The SPPD has opted for solar lighting over standard for several reasons. Solar light is generated by capturing the sun’s energy. While installing such lights will initially cost more at the beginning, when comparing the costs of cables, installation, metering equipment, and construction for regular lighting, solar energy is more cost-efficient in the long run. Needless to say, not having electric bills is an added bonus. The SPPD urges the community to join in support for this project. The safety of our residents and visitors are a priority.
