The Mayor of San Pedro Town Daniel “Danny” Guerrero handed a donation to the young and upcoming Heaven’s Voice Choir. The choir comprising mainly of the youth members from the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church, have been performing at various community events. In a show of appreciation, on Tuesday February 10th, Mayor Danny handed over a pair of drums and two pairs of maracas to choir leader Natalie Arceo.
In handing the donation over to Arceo, Mayor Guerrero said that he hopes the small donation will be used for the improvement of the choir. “This is a donation for the youth choir so that they can keep busy learning new musical skills,” said Guerrero. The Mayor took the opportunity to reiterate his commitment to the local musicians on the island.
On hand to receive the donation was Arceo, who thanked the Mayor for his constant support to musicians, especially the young choir. “I know the choir will appreciate the donation. Our plan will be to try and get a few people to teach us some lessons on how to use these instruments. I am sure it will sound so lovely at public events and at church services,” stated Arceo.
The drums were specially ordered and custom made for the group and acquired from local drum-makers in Dangriga, southern Belize. The maracas were imported from Mexico in an effort to fuse the Mestizo and Garifuna rhythms for a unique sound.
The Heaven’s Voice Choir was formed through the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church Youth Ministry in an effort to keep young people busy while exploring their musical talent. They perform weekly at Saturday evening masses, and have also made several public appearances in such events like the Finados, Dia de La Guadalupana, Dia de San Pedro, the patriotic celebrations and Christmas functions.
