The San Pedro Police Department officially received their new housing barracks on Wednesday August 13th, thanks to the efforts of the San Pedro business sector. However there are still two houses that have not been delivered after months in the making. The two homes were originally donated to the Belize Coast Guard by the San Pedro Business Association (SPBA) and after they were vacated, were given to the San Pedro Police Department. Founding member of SPBA Elito Arceo, was prepared to move the houses months ago, but the San Pedro Town Council stepped in to take the task.
Today September 4th makes it 165 days since the commitment was made by SPTC to relocate the two buildings, and that promise has yet to be filled. The two houses would needed accommodations for the officers assigned to duty on the island. The houses do require adjustments and repairs, and this is to be done only after the houses have been moved to the property behind the old barracks.
Deputy Mayor Gabriel “Gaby” Nuñez has been put in charge of relocating the buildings. There have been all sorts of excuses as to why these houses have not yet been moved. This time Nuñez said that, the month of September is filled with numerous activities and proves to be a busy month for the SPTC. Nuñez indicated that the houses will now be moved after the September celebrations.
On Wednesday August 13th the Ministry of National Security announced that $50,000 was given for the repairs of the two buildings.
