Select graduation students of St. John’s Junior College (SJCJC) have been awarded Jesuit scholarships to further their education, and two of the recipients are San Pedranos. 18-year-old Raymundo Nuñez and 19-year-old Alexya Perez will be graduating on Sunday, June 8th with their Associate’s Degree, and have received scholarships due to their academic excellence. A total of eight students were awarded Jesuit scholarships;Alexya Perez, Andre Alamina, Betty Tan, Daniel Waight, Megan Martinez, Paul Sylvestre, Reneisha Banner and Raymundo Nuñez.
Nuñez is a proud graduate of San Pedro High School and has being studying biochemistry at SJCJC for the past two years. He will be continuing his studies in the same field of biochemistry at the private co-educational and Jesuit University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania USA. “I am both happy and excited to receive the scholarship. I would like to thank my parents for supporting me, for without them this would not have been possible. I would also like to thank those who wrote recommendation letters for me when I was applying for the scholarship. These people include: Ms. ConchitaFlota, Mr. Einer Gomez and Ms. Patty Arceo,” said Nuñez. “To all the youth, I’d like to encourage them to continue with their education and strive for the best. You never know when you might get rewarded for it.”
A graduate from Saint Catherine’s Academy, Alexya Perez, is originally from San Pedro Town and has always been a highly academic person. She will be graduating with her Associate’s degree in Social Science with a double major in Economics and Sociology and will also be continuing her studies at the John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio USA. “I will be majoring in economics and my track of study will be geared towards development economics. I’m very grateful for being given this wonderful opportunity to further my studies overseas. I was excited to receive the news that I was chosen amongst a group of very deserving applicants. It’s good to know that my hard work throughout high school and sixth form was enough to distinguish me from this group. I’d like to thank the Jesuits for being willing to award a scholarship to myself and the other awardees. I would also like to extend a big thank you to the faculty and staff of SJCJC for their dedication to the success of the students. And finally, I am most grateful for my parents and family’s continued assistance and support, without them this would not be possible.” “The message I would like to send is that students need to set goals and work towards achieving them. You must know what you want! This has helped me stay focused and on the path towards achieving what I have. Also, it is important to remember that time is of the essence. One must manage their time, leaving enough for studying while making time for friends and extracurricular activities. ,” said Perez.
