Lady Rebels and Legends are the winners of the first ever San Pedro Volleyball Association 2013 6-A-Side Interoffice Male and Female Volleyball Tournament. The final games took place on Saturday November 16th at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium.
The last leg of the tournament started with the female game in which Lady Rebels, the leaders in the tournament, took on the Butterfingers. The game started in favor of Butterfingers, who took the first and second sets with 25-14 and 25-23. But the Lady Rebels made a stunning comeback in the last three sets that ended 25-22, 25-23 and 15-8. It was quite the defeat for Butterfingers who were considered the veterans, however the determination of the young Lady Rebels saw them walk away with the championship title. San Pedro High School (SPHS) females settled for third place in the tournament.
In the male category, Sandtasiks faced off with Legends to battle for the male championship title in a game that also went up to five sets. The first set was convincingly won by Sandtasiks with a 25-14 lead. Legends made a comeback on the second and third sets 25-23 and 25-22 points forcing the game to go into five rounds. The fourth set was picked up by Sandtasiks in a 25-23 point game, but Legends was determined to fight for the title and fight they did, as when they won the fifth set in a 15-6 point set, and winning the male championship. SPHS males took home third place in the competition.
Following the games, awards and trophies were distributed by organizer Erick Santizo and Gabriel “Gaby” Nuñez, The San Pedro Town Councilor responsible for sports. Hazel Sanches was chosen as Female Most Valuable Player (MVP), while Guillermo Rivero received the Male MVP. Best blocker was awarded to Abel Nuñez, while Best Server was given to Erick Santizo. Baydr Sajia was given the award for Best Spike, while Ian Pou received the award for Best Setter. The top three teams in each category received trophies. Then two fun awards were given out: The Most Valuable Veteran award went to Virjilio ‘Bicho’ Rivero, while Teacher Moncho Acosta, took home the Most Valuable Fan Award for not missing a single game during the entire tournament.
Tournament organizer Eric Santizo took the opportunity to thank Gabriel Nuñez Sr., Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr., Magda Guerrero, Ilna Nuñez, Ceni Nuñez and Bowen and Bowen Limited for their constant support throughout the tournament. According to the organizers, they are preparing for the kick off of the 4×4 beach and 2×2 beach tournaments which is scheduled to start in January of 2014. The San Pedro Sun joins the community in congratulating the organizers and winners of the tournament for a job well done.
