Meet your National AIDS Commission Island Committee members

Share

The National AIDS Commission Island Committee was established to carry out the local aspect of the National Response to HIV following the guidelines of the National AIDS Commission. The entity is commissioned by the Government of Belize to carry out this function.

The committee is made up of a multi-sectoral body. The San Pedro Sun takes this opportunity to present the members of the executive body to you – the community that they serve.

38 NAC-Kristina RomeroMy name is Kristina Romero, currently the secretary of the NAC Island Committee. I am from Corozal but lived on the island several years as a child and now I call it home. I am presently working at the National Drug Abuse Control Council, Ministry of Health as the District Coordinator for Belize Rural South. I am an educator at heart, I taught English language, Spanish and Literature at the High School level and in 2011 decided to transition into the field of Drug Prevention education.
I enjoy working with the youth of Belize; I am currently volunteering with the San Pedro Roman Catholic Youth Ministry, I am the Vice-President of the San Pedro Cancer Society, member of the San Pedro Cultural Committee, and I am a team leader for one of the Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (DANA) Committees for NEMO in San Pedro. I work closely with the schools and I am currently running a program, Student Empowerment Program, in several of the schools on the island.
I have a passion for cooking Asian and Italian cuisine and I enjoy listening to music. I love to laugh and I believe that there is always a positive side to all situations.
One of my many goals with the NAC Island Committee is to educate my community on HIV/AIDS as there are a lot of misconceptions about the illness; having HIV/AIDS in no longer a death sentence. People can lead healthy lives once they are properly educated. So, I invite San Pedro to contact us to learn more. You might not be infected but you might know someone who is and be able to help them with the right information. We have certified counsellors who can help you at any time.
