The Central American and Mexican communities in San Pedro celebrated their independence with a night showcasing their culture through food and music. The activities were organized in collaboration with the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC).
The official activity, which is a part of the island’s September Celebration Calendar of activities, was held on Saturday, September 14th at the San Pedro Central Park. The celebration coincided with the eve of the 192nd anniversary of the day of independence for Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica and Nicaragua obtaining political freedom from Spain on September 15, 1821. In the case of Mexico, they celebrated their 203rd year of independence having obtained it on the 16th of September 1810. Unlike the other Central American countries, Belize is the only English speaking country of British descent and the youngest nation of the region. These Spanish speaking countries have flourished throughout the years embracing their Spanish heritage while emphasizing on their individually unique cultures.
At the event, each country had a booth showcasing their traditional foods. The aromas of the different food attracted several Hispanics who came out and celebrated “El Dia de Independencia” with our neighboring countries. Of course the Mexicans had their traditional “Tacos al Pastor” and “Tacos de Res”. The crowd delighted in this flavor feast.
The crowd also got to get up and dance to a mix of Central American and Mexican music. A local duo played everything for salsa to merengue, enticing people to get up off their seats and move to the beat. The party went on till the wee hours of the morning.
The San Pedro Sun wishes all Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Mexican nationals living in Belize a happy Independence Day.
