Come on government, will business shutdowns and demonstrations call your attention towards crime and violence?

Dear Editor,
For the past days, crime and violence has been in the headlines of our local newspapers in Belize and on the target of other regional and international news media. Why can’t it be something positive and outstanding that identify Belize and allows it to be features in the news and media? We are a small nation but in fact we are competing with other developed nations in forming part of the “Black List”. I am not taking any sides against any political party but I do not think that our present government is doing its utmost best to reduce the high crime rate and violence rate in Belize by simply paying those individuals involved in the gang truce. So far this action has proven to be ineffective, our people need more concrete actions other than promises that are not fulfilled so that then our people can sleep without fear and the worry that someone else could be found dead on the street side, without proper punishment of the perpetrator(s).
I want to know why our University of Belize (UB) students being the targets of crime in Belize? So far in less than a month a young man and a young woman, both students enrolled at the University of Belize (UB) in the Central Campus, have been the victims of crime with nothing been done to punish properly their perpetrators. UB family is very concerned with these incidents that have decided to join forces with Sacred Heart Junior College, Galen University, and the community of the Twin Town in the Cayo District to demonstrate peacefully and march against the high crime and violence that Belize is presently experiencing. People are getting tired of keeping silent and mourning the unjustified deaths of their families and loved ones. Something else should be done government and prime minister, please give us the peace of mind and tranquillity that we deserve, help us reduce crime even if is something small that target the root of this problem!

Yours respectfully
Arianie Castañeda
University of Belize (UB) student
