The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) received two donations on Tuesday July 3rd. The first donation was a Mosquito fogger used for the spraying of mosquitoes that are prevalent in the rainy season. The second donation was a motorcycle that will be used in enforcing traffic laws on the island. Both donations are important for the SPTC to effectively execute their responsibilities.
At 10AM on Tuesday, members of the Dr Otto Rodriguez San Pedro Poly-Clinic II visited the SPTC office to deliver the much needed mosquito spraying machine. The machine was handed over to the Mayor of San Pedro Daniel “Danny Boy” Guerrero by the clinic’s administrator Owen Vellos. According to the Mayor Guerrero, the machine came in a timely since with the rains there is always an increase of mosquitoes on the island. The Mayor said that the mosquito fogger will be used for the northern part of the island. Also present to witness the handing over was Lisa Tillett, the San Pedro Public Health Inspector.
In speaking to The San Pedro Sun, SPTC Foreman Samuel Gonzalez explains that sprays to combat mosquitoes are done in cycles. The spray starts two days after the last rain and is done for three straight days. Following the first three sprays of malathion, sprays are done once every seven days. “The new machine will help make spraying easier for the council. The current one will be used for the southern portion while the new one will be used for the northern portion of the island. We will be able to conduct sprays simultaneously on both portion of the island,” said Gonzalez.
Meanwhile at 11AM the same day, the Ambergris Caye Traffic Department received a much needed motorcycle bring their fleet to six. The new motorcycle was donated by Ian Richie on behalf of Captain Shark’s. At hand to receive the donation was Councilor with responsibility of the Transport Department at the SPTC, Kenrick Brackett and head of the Traffic Department Chris Nunez.
“We saw the need that the traffic department hand and we decided to join in with other previous donors. With the new motorcycle the council will be better able to execute their job,” said Richie. The brand new Chinese 125 BZ Street Bike type motorcycle comes with helmet and will be used for patrols. “We are very thankful for the donation from Captain Shark’s. We can assure the public that the donation will be put to good use and will go a long way in conducting traffic patrols in an effort to improve the traffic problems affecting the island,” said councilor Brackett.
The donation of the mosquito fogger and the motorcycle are both timely for the council who hopes to improve the condition and living standards of the over 12000 islanders.
