During the week of San Pedro’s 36th Township Anniversary, November 23rd-27th, Trade License renewal fees at the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) will come with a 10% discount. Traditionally SPTC offers a 5% discount on Township Day, which is November 27th. However, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and to help the struggling business community, a special discount will be available for that entire week.
SPTC’s Mayor Daniel Guerrero hopes this discount will help businesses during this challenging time. He urges business owners to take advantage of the week-long special discount beginning on Monday, November 23rd through Friday. The special discount and week-extension for renewals is one way to commemorate the Township Anniversary. Unlike other years, there will be no fanfare, fairs, or open houses about the town’s history to observe the occasion. The quiet celebration is due to the safety measures set in place prohibiting mass gatherings, potentially leading to a deadly virus super spreader.
San Pedro officially transitioned from a fishing village to a town on November 27, 1984, under the leadership of the late Mayor Gilberto ‘Chico’ Gomez. Don Chico served as Mayor during the periods of 1985-1988 and 1991-1992. On September 28, 2020, he died at his home on the island after being ill for some time.
At his memorial service, Mayor Guerrero praised Don Chico’s contribution to the island community. “We consider him one of the architects of our town. His contributions to the development of San Pedro are vast, but key amongst them was fighting for Township,” said Guerrero.
