When Belize began to experience a hand sanitizer shortage due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Travellers Liquors Ltd. came to the rescue, switching gears from distilling rum to producing a sanitizing product dubbed Sani-Bel. Its main ingredient is high proof alcohol concocted via a formula from the World Health Organization (WHO). Currently, the liquid solution comes in one-litre glass bottles, and the company urges customers not to drink it and to keep it away from fire and out of the reach of children.
Magali Gabb, General Manager at Travellers Liquors, said that when the pandemic was approaching Belize, they decided to do something about the shortage of hand sanitizers. Other distilleries in the region were already making these products. Thus, they established communications with their colleagues at the West Indies Rum and Spirit Association as well as with government officials to get clearance. “The base of the product is ethanol alcohol, at 95% proof. Then we add the other ingredients, which are hydrogen peroxide, glycerine, and citrus oil. At the end of the process, the hand sanitizer has a concentration of 75% of alcohol,” Gabb explained. She indicated that the product has been well received by their consumers and emphasized that because the sanitizer is liquid-based and not gel, people should not drink it. “We want to make it absolutely clear to keep it away from children and fire sources. It is flammable, so don’t apply it or spray it on your hand and then light the stove, you might get burned. It is a sanitizer and a disinfectant,” Gabb said. The bottles of Sani-Bel Hand Sanitizers are appropriately labelled with valuable information and stresses that it is for external use only, and not for consumption.
