Due to the increase in the cost of doing business in Belize, Tropic Air has announced an increase in their airfare effective Thursday, June 1st. The airline indicated that the new prices will go up by at least 7%, and it will apply to all domestic routes except flights from San Pedro Ambergris, and Placencia to the Philip Goldson International Airport. The exception is due to the considerable amount of traffic generated from the international airport.
Tropic Air’s President John Grief III explained that the new rate is reflective of the hikes of prices in the aviation industry. “The cost of the airplanes keeps going up, the parts, training, maintenance,” said Grief. “It is not just because of one factor. But at the same time we also continue to invest in customer satisfaction and comfort.”
The new airfare will apply to tickets purchased on, or after June 1st. According to Tropic Air, the nature of the airline business, with ever changing taxes, volatile fuel pricing and many conditions beyond their control, makes it impossible to guarantee regular/stable fares in the future.
Tropic Air is one of two Belizean airlines, and has steadily grown to become the largest and most experienced airline in Belize. It now employs over 350 staff, and offers over 200 daily scheduled flights with 16 aircrafts to 19 destinations in Belize, Mexico, Honduras and Guatemala. In 2016 it carried almost 300,000 passengers and moved over 400,000 pieces of freight system wide.
