From as early as 4AM, San Pedranos started the annual and traditional Dia de San Pedro celebrations on Thursday, June 29th. The first day of the festivities honoring the island’s Patron Saints, San Pedro and San Pablo, included a full day of activities spearheaded by the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church. The festival will span over the weekend with the Miss San Pedro Pageant and local and international entertainment at the Honourable Louis Sylvestre sporting complex.
On Thursday, the traditional celebration started with the annual fishermen’s mass at 4AM in the catholic church. Father Eduardo Montemayor presided over the mass, which included a breakfast. Afterward, a boat procession followed from the municipal dock at 6AM. The procession stopped by the newly built Boca del Rio bridge. Father Montemayor prayed and blessed the bridge. The march ended on the lagoon side of San Pedro Town at the well-known ‘Embarcadero’ (docking site) area. Father Montemayor prayed for the fishermen and stakeholders, asked for a successful fishing season, and blessed each vessel with holy water.
A parade then took place with the participation of Mayor Gualberto ‘Wally’ Nuñez, his councilors, Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez, and many faithful Catholics. The procession ended at the Catholic church. Meanwhile, island athlete Kian Trejo led a youth torch run from downtown San Pedro to and from the San Pablo subdivision.
Other activities at the central park throughout the day include a fly-casting distance competition, a costume contest, an art competition, and a midday mass. The church activities will continue in the evening with the awards banquet and family dance starting at 6PM at the Angel Nuñez Auditorium.
The celebration will continue Friday, June 30th, with the Miss San Pedro Pageant and the festivity’s international night on Saturday.
