Honoring the island’s Patron Saint St. Peter, Catholic residents observed ‘El Dia de San Pedro’ on Monday, June 29th with holy mass, a boat and street procession plus the blessing of fishermen’s vessels that asks for a successful fishing season.
The annual festivities will be different this year, without the usual extravaganza held at the Honourable Louis Sylvestre Sporting Complex often featuring local and international entertainment.
Events for the day began at 4AM with a Fisherman’s Mass, followed by breakfast an hour later. At 6AM a boat procession departed from the Municipal Dock heading to the Embarcadero (docking site) on the lagoon side.
The procession was joined by another group of boats on the lagoon, making the gathering one of the largest in recent times.
Afterward, all boats were blessed and a parade left towards the Catholic Church by the Central Park. At 12 noon, the less privileged were provided lunch at the Lions Den. An outdoor mass is scheduled for later in the evening, beginning at 6:30PM at the Central Park and ending the day of religious activities with a procession.
