Under the glow of a full moon, San Pedro town residents were treated to an international concert featuring the female Cuban band ‘Morena Son’ on Wednesday, June 14th. Held at the San Pedro House of Culture (SPHC), the event was organized by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), the San Pedro Cultural Committee, in collaboration with the Embassy of Cuba in Belize and the SPHC.
Welcoming guests was Jorge Aldana from the SPTC, and he introduced the group, which comes from Santiago de Cuba. Its members are Aimee Campos, Aylen Guevara, Maria Soto, Juna Filiu, Niurka Cardona, Orialis Luna, and Deisy Estrada, and they have toured South America and Europe. This is their first time in Belize.
Shortly after 8PM, the rhythm of guitars, drums and melodious voices filled the air. Morena Son’s traditional Cuban salsa hits had the audience on their feet almost immediately. Some of the band members even got into the crowd, showing them a few moves. Audience members enjoyed their one-on-one lessons, happily dancing away with the talented ladies.
The concert neared its end, but the crowd kept asking for more. Morena Son did just that, until they closed with the classic ‘Guantanamera.’ The crowd went wild, joining in the singing and capping off the night with much applause.
Members of Morena Son thank everyone for coming out to partake in the event. A HUGE thanks goes to all who came out, and all the sponsors who made the event possible. Special thanks go to San Pedro Town Council, the Belize Tourism Board, San Pedro Belize Express, Banana Beach Resort, Black & White Restaurant, Elvis Kitchen, Sandbar Restaurant, La Divina Providencia Restaurant, Briana’s Deli, Caribbean Villas, and Local Golf Cart Rental.
