A 23-foot boat with nine passengers and two crew members reportedly capsized in the northern coast of Caye Caulker Village on Tuesday, August, 15th. A search and rescue team was immediately dispatched from E-Z Boy Tours after they received a distress call about the incident. Near 6PM, the occupants of the vessel were found drifting away on the waters of the Caribbean Sea. Everyone was brought to safety and no injuries were reported.
A representative from E-Z Boy told The San Pedro Sun that the weather conditions seemed favourable on Wednesday evening. It had been a bit choppy earlier in the day, but not at the time of the accident. It is believed that the boat, which belongs to a resident on the northern part of Caye
Caulker, was overloaded or unbalanced, causing it to tip over. They reported that when they rescued the 11 persons, everyone had their life jackets on, and no one seemed injured. However, they believe the crew members (with Belize City addresses) were operating the boat without a valid license.
The Belize Port Authority was contacted for an official report on the boat accident. They indicated that they are yet to conclude their investigation.
